Textured backgrounds have always been a part of web design. However, many of the textures used in early websites often looked amateurish. I decided that a textured background would add interest to this WEB DESIGN FOR AN ARTIST'S PORTFOLIO WEBSITE. The artist, a well known romance novel and children's book illustrator, wanted a background texture that reflected his style. To that end, he created a painterly texture just for the website.
I used the abstract design as a background texture. The large strokes give a painter's brush effect that compliments the artist's work featured in this portfolio. We used the same texture as a design element in the blog that supports this website, as shown below.

Why not try this approach to texture when you have large areas of flat color in your web design. It provides a subtle but dramatic touch to flat color panels in your design!
