The Greater Newark Conservancy's Education Program offers a myriad of hands-on environmental lessons every year to students throughout Newark with topics from earthworms to oil spills.

Through hands-on activities, students learn by doing. Instead of listening to a speech about water pollution, students will test actual water samples and learn about our waterways. If the lesson is about insects, live specimens will be brought into the classroom to be handled and observed. This kind of active participation increases student motivation and aids in both comprehension and retention of the subject.

The lessons offered by the Conservancy serve as supplements that enhance existing school curriculum and bring nature to the indoors.

  • Test water samples for pollution
  • Start a worm farm in your classroom
  • Make a model of a landfill

  • Create a rainforest collage
  • Grow vegetables on the windowsill
