The Greening Program, through a grant by the Department of Environmental Protection, plants street trees to create greenways in Newark.

Extensive community involvement assures the survival of these trees. The community is canvassed, potential tree planting sites are mapped, and residents and volunteers are educated in the importance of trees in urban settings. Planting of the trees is conducted by the community and volunteers who are trained in proper planting techniques, pruning and maintenance. Each resident who receives a tree, waters and cares for it. Follow-up canvassing is conducted to ensure proper maintenance takes place.
