WEB DESIGN tools have quickly evolved for the better. Today, it is easier for web designers to create web sites that can be maintained by the average small businessperson with few technical skills. And, such web sites allow the businessperson to update content instantly without fear of compromising the web site's design. This provides clear benefits to any business. First, the web site becomes an up-to-date information resource, not just a static online brochure. The availability of low cost and open source CONTENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS (CMS) has made it all possible. These tools allow any small business owner to take full control of web site content without worrying about html, dhtml or any other web site coding issues. Plus, they can do content updates with minimal training and cost. As a result, clients are empowered to add rich content to their web sites at will.
A good example of this is a web site we recently created for a Real Estate Brokerage in Virginia. In this project, we developed the web design, and installed a low cost CMS, allowing the client to add, edit and delete content pages using a web based interface. It took no more than a half hour to show the client how to use this powerful, yet simple tool. We built the initial web site with approximately 20 pages. However, in less than two months, the client has personally added over 100 additional pages of rich content to the web site. The CMS made it all possible! The client saved considerable expense by not hiring a webmaster to add the additional pages. Additionally, the web site is an easy to maintain, up-to-the-minute resource that provides greater value to potential and existing clients, exploiting the full potential of the Internet as a business tool.
